The Brazilian government released a program to increase the national production of fertilizers and reduce the country’s dependence on imports. The National Fertilizer Plan will serve as a guideline for the development of the domestic fertilizer market over the next 28 years.

Around 85% of the fertilizers used in Brazilian agriculture come from imports, so the plan will seek to reduce the percentage of imports to about 45% by 2050, taking into account the likely increase in demand the country will see in the near future.

To achieve this goal the plan will focus on some of the main pillars of the production chain in modern agriculture, such as the use of new technologies, sustainability, and mineral inputs.

The program will be overseen by the National Fertilizer and Plant Nutrition Council, which will be the advisory and deliberative body responsible for coordinating the full implementation of the plan, to ensure Brazil reaches the desired autonomy in the sector.
